What is contract rearing?

Contract rearing involves the movement of replacement  calves or heifers from the owner’s farm for rearing on contract by another farmer.

With milk production increasing , the availability of land around milking parlour will place limits on the volume of milk some farms are capable of producing. An increasing number of dairy farmers are looking to  engage with other farmers to rear their replacement heifers for them. This helps to release land on the dairy farm for milk production.

What makes contract rearing attractive to dairy farmers?

In addition to releasing land for milk production:

  • It can free up labour to specialize more on dairying. (Especially in early spring when dairy farmers are very busy)
  • It can suit farms where livestock accommodation is limiting.
  • It can suit farms where heifers are failing to achieve the performance levels required.

What makes contract rearing attractive to rearers?

  • It can provide a steady monthly cash flow, giving a stable monthly
  • income by direct debit.
  • The business risks associated with drystock production are reduced.
  • It is potentially more profitable.
  • The demands of buying and selling are diminished or eliminated.

Who may contract rearing suit?

  • Farmers with good animal husbandry and grassland skills.
  • A farmer who may be looking to get out of cows but wants to continue with farming, and to work more sociable hours.
  • A partime farmer with suitable land and facilities.
